My Question (draft one)

In the children’s television show, The Smurfs, the dating rituals revolve around the one and only female Smurfette. Smurfette has many suitors of the male population of smurfs, but she dates more frequently five male smurfs; Brainy, Handy, Hefty, Vanity Smurf and Enamoured Smurf. This situation, of having five main suitors, is extremely strange to that of the ‘real world,’ in the fact it is better for Smurfette to not pick just one male smurf, but to continue to date all five smurfs. Given this highly unusually dating scenario and that in the ‘real world’ Smurfette would be named an whore, and the fact that courtship is so important in the show, it might cause someone to ask, “How might this dating scenario effect young viewers as they begin to take part in the rituals of courtship?”

Well...

I am sorry to say, but because I am not need to keep updating this blog for my writing class it has gotten really hard to keep up. So at this point of time I am going to take a break from writing about TV shows. I am sorry if anyone out there was reading my blog, and was liking it. I hope that this summer I will have some time to get back to writing the blog. Thanks to all of those out there that read this blog.

My Argument (Draft Three)

Although we might expect that over the past 25 years the main relationships within many, and most, television shows would have changed, they have remained “conventional” because of this over lying idea that you want to find your perfect person, your ‘one to one’. By conventional, I mean that these relationships are long term, monogamous, and based on deep friendship. This would indicate that leaving an idea of no matter the age a child they are learning the same kinds of relationship values in the shows they are watching not all too different from those learned by children 25 yeas ago.

My Argument (Draft Two)

Although over the past 25 years the main relationships within many, and most, television shows has remained “conventional” because of this over lying idea that you want to find your perfect person, you’re one to one. By conventional I mean that these relationships are long term, monogamous, and base on deep friendship. This plays along the idea that the climate of relationships to time that has past, in the past 25 years, has not changed much in general public’s view, leaving an idea of no matter the age a child they are learning the same kinds of relationship values in the shows they are watching.

Boy Meets World (also the assignment blog post)

Plot Summary for Boy Meets World:
The show is about an average eleven year old boy named Cory. Whose best friend, Shawn, happens to come from the wrong side of the tracks. The two of these boys happen to be kept on their toes by one of their teachers, Mr. Feeny, and there is a girl, Topanga, who no matter what Cory does, he has trouble understanding her. His home life is kept very interesting by his older brother, as time passes seems to become more idiotic. As the show goes on, Cory and Shawn’s lives start to change, from the stains on their lives to Topanga and Cory becoming more then just friends. This all happens as Cory becomes less naive about the world to also becoming more responsible.

Show Information:
Seasons run/running- 7 seasons (1993-2000)
Episode length- 30 minutes (half an hour)
Animation/Live- Live
Type- Comedy

Situation of Discourse:
Author-
1. Implied: I think that Cory is the implied author. This is because it is his story and it is really all about his life. Yes, there are points about other people, but that is really on the side, kind of like a side dish. The show is also really told from the view of how Cory sees things happening or how it has happened to him.
2. Assumptions: I think that the real authors might have planed to have the story written like this for a reason. It makes it easier to follow the story line if it is all written some what the same. Knowing the title is Boy Meets World, someone could tell that it is about a boy and how his life meets with the world around him. Knowing that, I would have to say that I assume that the authors wanted the story to be told from the boy’s point of view, and that would be Cory’s point of view.
3. Names: Jeff Sherman, Steve Young, Jeff Menell, Mark Blutman, Howard Busgang, Andy Guerdat, Matthew Nelson, Carlos Aragon, Eric Brand, David Brownfield, Janette Kotichas Burleigh, Patricia Carr, Ed Decter, Barbara Feldman, Mark Fink, Patricia Forrester, Allison M. Gibson, Stephen Hibbert, Ellen Idelson, Susan Estelle Jansen, April Kelly, Kevin Kelton, Robert Kurtz, Bill Lawrence, Rob Lotterstein, Glen Merzer, Susan Meyers, Gary H. Miller, Erica Montolfo, Eileen O'Hare, Lara Runnels, Barry Safchik, Michael Swerdlick, Bob Tischler, Judy Toll, Donna Trujillo
Audience-
1. Implied: I think that the implied audience is teens. For the show is about how Cory lives his life, starting at 13 and going till college (or so). I think that the show is trying to apply to the masses of teens, at the time that the show came out, to the same kinds of things that Cory and his friends were going through. This helps the audience connect better with how the characters grow and change because they have gone through some of the same things.
2. Goals/Influence: I think that the goals might have something to due with the fact that Cory is always with or wanting to be with Topanga. This relays, onto me, an idea of one to one, and I think that is what the show was trying to get across. The idea that you should be with one person and do what you can to make them happy. Or at least that is the goal I can see within this show.
3. Actual: My feelings on the actual audience is that it was geared for teens about the same age as those teens within the show, or even who ever could relate to the characters. I think that the show did well to play to the young adults that were going through the same kinds of things that these teens were. This made it a show that even watching know, teens can relate to. So I think within the next few years that the show will still have a wide group of people that is its target audience, but that group is going to start to fade.
4. Include Self: At times I think that I could include myself with in the actual or implied audience, but most of the time the show just felt to old for me. I know that I was a little young to be the right age that Cory, Topanga, and Shawn were. But once again I think I will have to say, I watched more of this show with my sister or with my friends that started watching it on the reruns and loved it.

Message/Appeals:
One thing about this show that I think really helps it message/appeals is that it is a comedy. Being a comedy it adds humor to many things that would normally be very stressful or just something that people would not be able to deal with. I think that the show works because of its humor. Thinking about how the show would be, with out playing fun at many different things, I don’t think that it would be very good. It is really made because of the playing up of the humor. Making it able to poke fun at many parts of high school and college, this might also help with some of the people from the audience being able to be a little more relaxed about some of those things that they, later in their lives might have to go through.

Characters:
Cory Matthews- does not understand Topanga, but in spite of that likes her
Topanga Lawrence- always keeping Cory on his toes, and likes him back

Main Courtship “Sighting”:
Cory and Topanga’s romance that travels through high school to college and ends in marriage

My Views on the “Sighting”:
All I really have to say is, true love. The idea of one to one coupling is back, and it is back strong in this show. Cory and Topanga date through high school and college and then they end up getting married. Know I don’t want to rain on any ones parade but this is something that is hard to do. Knowing that they did take a break from dating each other, they always ended up back together. This also makes a point about how dating a really good friend is a good thing and that you two will probably stay together. This, I know, affected me when I was younger and watched the show. I did always want to find out that my good friend liked me and that we would be together. That is not really true, for me (not that I have dated any of my good friends) or my friends that have dated really good friends, it ended badly. I think for this idea to really work it has to be the right friend and man, I think the two of you must really like each other.

I would also like to add:
Once again the idea of one to one has returned. Do you see a common theme throughout many different shows? I also think that the longest lasting relationships have to deal with the good friend because you know each other. Knowing how to deal with each other before you start dating might help the relationship. Making the bond that the two people hold stronger, or that is really just a guess on my part. I think that it is really hard to say, why so many shows have the same idea or end in the same way, but they are so different that it makes you want to see more.

The Smurfs

Plot Summary for The Smurfs:
The show is about these small blue 'people' called Smurfs. The Smurfs are very friendly, and most of them are named after the thing that they do the best, for example the one smurf who thinks he knows all is Brainy Smurf. But the Smurfs do have to worry about something, or someone. That someone is Gargamel, the cunning and two-faced wizard, and all the things he sends after them. He at first made Smurfette to lure the other Smurfs to him. But that ended up backfiring on him. But most of the show is about the problems that might arise in the village or how Gargamel is trying some new plan to get the Smurfs.

Show Information:
Seasons run/running- Unknown number of seasons, but no fewer then 256 episodes were produced (in 1981 NBC had the T.V. series produced)
Episode length- Unknown
Animation/Live- Animation
Type- Cartoon, Family, Comedy

Situation of Discourse:
Author-
1. Implied: Well, I would have to say the Smurfs, for each episode it seems like a different smurf is telling the story. So it is more a story of their lives, and how they are getting over the many changes or difficulties that might arise.
2. Assumptions: I would have to say that I think the real author(s) are really smart to think of this idea. But trying to think of how they came up with this idea, I have no clue. I think that it has a lot to deal with a big family and how that family might be dealing with the problems that arise. So this could/might be based off of a family of one of the authors and all that the family and their crazy uncles and such deal with life as it comes at them.
3. Names: Hanna & Barbera (made the T.V. series), but the real and first creater was Pierre Culliford-better known as Peyo
Audience-
1. Implied: A group of young Smurfs, I think might be what the implied audience consists of. For I feel that this show has a feel about it that has to deal with the older and wiser grandfather telling the young about all that went on in his life, also about all the stories that he might have heard over the years. But it could also be aimed for a younger adult group of people to watch, this for the same reasons I feel that it might be aimed for young Smurfs.
2. Goals/Influence: I think that this show message/goal is just to have a moral, or just to be laughed at. I don’t know if it is really trying to convey some deep message, but to been seen as fun. This makes me feel that the intentions are more of those of a lighter, maybe you will get what we are saying, but it does not matter if you don’t for it is funny anyway, kind of meanings to the show.
3. Actual: I think that the actual audience is that of a pre-teen to young adult group of people. The show is a cartoon, and is funny, but some of what happens in the show seems to have an older feel about it.
4. Include Self: YES!!! I do have to say, that when I was little I loved to sit down on Saturday mornings and watch The Smurfs. Though I had never thought as in-depth as I am know about the show. But at times I really wanted to be like Smurfette and have all the guys wanting to gain my attention. But being more like Sassette, the tomboy girl smurf made to keep Smurfette company, it was hard. I could only really connect with all the boys as a jock, or more over a tomboy.

Characters:
Smurfette- The only female smurf (other then Sassette who was created to keep Smurfette company, but the two are really nothing alike)
All the other male Smurfs- They all shower Smurfette with gifts and flowers, trying to win her attentation

Main Courtship “Sighting”:
Smurfette and all of her Admirers

My Views on the “Sighting”:
Smurfette and all of her guys, well that is something that anyone could write a very long paper about. All of the male smurfs are trying for the attention of Smurfette, I don’t know if just to be in her company or to be with her. Most of the male smurfs bring her gifts from the different traits that they might have, such as, Cook Smurf who bakes her food. But the show always keeps the watcher wondering about who she is going to end up with. I know that from when I was little, I was always wondering about who Smurfette was going to choose, trying to find her ‘perfect’ match. Through out the show, you have the male smurfs vying for the attention of Smurfette. This leads me to think about the many different views or concepts of courtship that are played upon in the show. This makes it have a very strong point about her dating habits, but never once is she called anything rude.

I Would Also Like to Add:
I would also like to add that even if Smurfette did test all of her options of all the male Smurfs that were available to her, she was trying to find that right one. The idea of a one to one coupling, to find that guy that will last a life time. But even within her search she creates, or has created for her, a love triangle. This triangle consists of the three males that she always seems to go back to; these smurfs are Handy, Brainy, and Hefty. Each had their own good points and bad, but never does she pick one out over another. From this, I think that I have always looked for those kinds of guys to date; I understand how strange that sounds. But when I was little, I watched this show like no other, and I always wanted to be like Smurfette. To have three guys hanging over her, a brain, a jock and a handyman. But those are also standards that are held by many women and males all over the place.

Dawson's Creek

Plot Summary for Dawson’s Creek:
The show is set in a small coastal, Massachusetts town named Capeside, which tells the story of four teenagers as they struggle through adolescence. The show is about 15-year-old Dawson Leery, is a meditative dreamer, and Josephine ‘Joey’ Potter, an intelligent tomboy who is unaware of her own beauty. Dawson and Joey have been friends since childhood and as they enter a confusing time in their lives, high school, where life beings to change. Going from what they knew to having nothing as it might seem to be. The show is based on what happens to these two young teens as they grow older and start to change in more ways then one.

Show Information:
Seasons run/running- 6 seasons (ended in 2003)
Episode length- 60 minutes (1 hour)
Animation/Live- Live
Type- Drama

Situation of Discourse:
Author-

1. Implied: Dawson, Joey and maybe Pacey, for these are the three biggest characters in the show. The show also is following their lives and how they are living them. So I think that the implied author is the main character’s them selves.

2. Assumptions: I can assume that they real authors are trying to play that they implied authors are Dawson, Joey and Pacey, for none of these characters have a strong overall leading voice in the show. Also I can assume that this was intentional to make the different characters connect more to the audience.

3. Names: Nan Hagan, Dana Baratta, Greg Berlanti, Hadley Davis, Gina Fattore, Anna Fricke, Maggie Friedman, Alex Gansa, Liz Garcia, Darin Goldberg, Diego Gutierrez, Holly Henderson, Tom Kapinos, Karin Lewicki, Shelley Meals, Rina Mimoun, Jed Seidel, Jeffrey Stepakoff, Rob Thomas, Liz Tigelaar, Mike White, Kevin Williamson

Audience-
1. Implied: Teens around the same age as those in the show, also including teens/young adults that have gone through similar situations as those in the show. The target audience is more of the high school age, but as the show grows older so does the target audience.

2. Goals/Influence: The influence, that I think, trying to be relayed has to deal with relationships and/or love that is around you, but you don’t see. Also dealing with as you grow older, many things in your life are going to change, and these are with how you look and act but also with whom you like and the friends that you soon want to be more then just friends.

3. Actual: I feel that the actual audience member is a lot like that of the implied audience member. This member would probably react as becoming enlightened on this new idea or development that had accord.

4. Include Self: I don’t really include myself as part of the actual audience, but I am part of the implied. My sister was part of the actual audience for she watched the show and really liked it. I was not drawn to the drama of dating and relationships that took place throughout the show.

Characters:
Dawson Leery- meets and falls for newcomer Jen, who lives next door
Joey Potter- slightly jealous of Dawson’s bonding with Jen, which comes out during a movie outing
Jen Lindley- arrives from New York City, moves into the house next door to Dawson's, there to help her grandmother take care of invalid grandfather
Pacey Witter- falling in love with a new mystery woman that comes to town, Tamara
Tamara Jacobs- turns out to be the new English teacher at Capeside High School

Main/Most Apparent Courtship “Sightings”:
-Dawson’s bonding/liking of Jen
-Joey’s jealousy of Dawson’s new bond with Jen
-Pacey’s love interest with Tamara

My Views on the “Sightings”:
--Dawson’s new bonding/liking of Jen is something that I think has to deal with that in a small town you get used to all of the people you have grown up with. Make this new girl, who happens to now live next door, very appealing. Jen becomes the ‘girl next door’ who the ‘boy next door’ happens to like very much. This makes the attraction between the two stronger, for to see each other they don’t have to travel as far. This is something that I think plays a lot to the whole image of the cute guy next door or the hot girl next door idea. This concept might be true in a lot of cases, but I know when I was younger I always dreamed that a hot/cute guy would move in next door and then he would want to date me. But this is not really the way that it goes, but a lot of times on show’s it will be played up as such.

--Joey’s jealousy of Dawson’s new and growing bond with Jen I think has to deal with that Joey has never really had to share Dawson with any other girl. She has always been the one girl for him, making it hard to let go of him for this new girl. Also, as Joey and Dawson are growing older they are getting more into the dating scene, which makes it hard for Joey to lose the guy that has always been there for her and who she is starting to see as more then just a friend. The best friend that ends up liking you, and of course the guy does not see it. This is something that is shown in a lot of different T.V. shows and movies. I think that having this in the show really plays up the things that I always see in shows. Feeling that this might be something that the writers thought would add to the show to help them connect with the teens watching the show. It is hard to say what they are really trying to get out of this idea. I know for a fact when I was in middle school, I had a few guy friends and I always was wondering if I really liked them more then I was willing to admit, this was mostly based on the fact that in when my sister would watch Dawson’s Creek, I would see the friend dynamics between Dawson and Joey.

--Pasey’s love interest with Tamara. Well this is something that is hard to see in a teen show, or something that the writer will bring out. The idea of a younger man liking an older woman, who happens to be his teacher, is not something that I would think to see in a teen T.V. show. I remember that thinking that there was nothing really wrong with Pasey liking Tamara, but know looking back on this I see how it is not a really good thing. But one thing that I remember later on in the show was Tamara telling Pasey that it was not a good idea for them to see each other again, it was not something that was good for either of them. I think that this relationship added a lot of drama for the show.

I would also like to add:
I think that this show is very heavy in its courtship problems or just ideas of courtship that come out. Making it connect to the many teens that watched this show over the years. I think that even though I did not really watch the show more then sitting down and asking my sister what was going on, I did get a few impressions of what courtship should be like. So I think that even not really being a big part of this show, it effected how I saw many things when I was younger. That was before I got more experience and started to make my own ideas about what courtship should be like. With each person there view on a show is skewed by what they have gone through during their life. Also, the idea of the love triangle that is heavily a part of the shows drama, so considering the show is seen as a drama, a person can tell it plays a large part of the shows story line. The love triangle is something that shows up in many places. In the show, and from what I have seen, it usually consists of one female and two males. Most of the time all three of these people are good friends and it left up to the female who she is going to be with. So in terms of the show, will Joey choose to be with Pacey or Dawson, and this is something that when the show ends is left up to the viewer to decided, for no final answer is given.

Image of the Blog Update (1)

"Image of the Blog Updates" will be short post explaining what I have done to update how the blog looks.

For example, if I had changed the background I would say, "The old background color was black; I thought that this was to dark for my blog so I changed it to light blue to give the blog a lighter or less harsh view."

What I have changed/added/taken away:

-I added a new list of links to the blog. This list of links are for varies quote sites that I find, that I feel have good quotes from the different show I will be using. The list of links is called "T.V. Quote Sites..."

-I added another new list of links to the blog. This list of links are part of my "research". The links are to forums, discussion groups or other sites that help describe the show or what people are saying about the show. The list of links is called " 'Research' Links, Forums, Discussion Boards, Ect."

That is what I have done to change how the blog looks.

Brainstorming...

Now that I have picked the topic and title, I had to do some thinking about what sort of shows do I want to write about. So I started with making a list of different kinds of criteria, not really counting any point on the list higher than any other, but a list to help me start to think up different ideas.

Criteria:
1. Appeal
-Who does it appeal to?
2. Length
-How long does the show run?
-What season are they on?
-How much longer is the show going to last?
3. Genre
-Sci-Fi? Drama? Comedy? Etc.
4. Scenarios
-What situations do the characters get into?
5. Classification
-Daytime? Primetime? Late Night?
6. Kind
-Is it live or animation?
7. Channel
-What channel plays this show?
-Lifetime? Disney? MTV?
8. Age
-How old is the show?

After making this list I started to think about all the shows that I have watch all the time, seen once or twice, watched when I was little, watched when I was babysitting, or just seen a clip of. So as I was thinking about all these shows that I have seen in some place in my life, I started to formulate a nice list.

Shows:
-The Smurfs
-Grey’s Anatomy
-Numb3r’s
-My Boys
-Firefly
-The Suit Life of Zack and Cody
-Beauty and The Geek
-Will and Grace
-The Class
-American Dragon: Jake Long
-Dawson’s Creek
-Zoey 101
-Lost
-The Family Guy
-Ugly Betty
-Full House
-The Real World: Denver
-Codename: Kids Next Door
-Fraggle Rock
-Tail Spin
-Scooby Doo
-Road Rules: Viewers Revenge
-Third Rock From the Sun

So know I have a list of some shows that I could/will write about. For I feel that these shows have something to do with “Courtship on the Tube”.

Why??? The starting of the blog.

When I was first handed this assignment of writing a blog dealing with courtship IO had no idea what I was going to do. I really did not understand what was expected of this blog, or what we even were going to have to write about. I knew that this concept of courtship is VERY present in the world around me, but I could not think of any specific things or how to compare it to what courtship used to be seen as. Then when we were handed the actual assignment on a sheet, after reading through it and seeing the nine topic ideas listed I started to understand what I could write about. Out of those nine topics listed the one topic that really caught my attention was the idea Courtship and Television.

Now looking at Courtship and Television there are many different things that could be used or different ways that this topic could be taken (dealing with the writing of the blog). So I sat down and started to think of why this was the ONE topic that I really wanted to write about.

Reasons:
There can be many different views, from the show to how the viewer sees the situation.
What period of time was the show made in, is it a newer show or older.
What different shows do I watch and how do they effect me?
How does the show effect a viewer and there view on Courtship?

So after I decided that this was going to be my topic, I had to start working on a title. The thing about the kind of title that I wanted was that I did not want it to be a “Blah” title. It should be something that makes the reader think a little and maybe even laugh a little. Also I wanted to have a title that related to the topic, so that the reader knew what they were going to be reading about. Thinking about it, I knew that I wanted the words “Courtship” and some version of “Television” in the title. The word television, I thought was over used, so I went and looked up some synonyms for the word television.

The words that I got were:
T.V.
Box
Tube
Small Screen
Out of that list, the only word that I felt had a good feel to it and was not over used was tube. So with so word play, not really, I came up with the title.

“Courtship on the Tube”

So after I had picked the topic and know had a working title, I stoped to think a about what I was really going to get out of this blog. I know that it is an assignment, but I want something more. So I came up with some ideas of what I am hoping to get out of this blog:
An idea of different views of love
How my different experience of “courtship” effects how I see “courtship” in the shows
How my view effect my ability to watch all the different points in the show
Looking deeper into the shows I watch
